Christian Discipleship

I wanted to say something about Christian discipleship and how discipleship fits in with life coaching.

I want to get just a little theological for a moment and mention two things: justification and sanctification. Justification is that moment when through faith in Christ your sins are forgiven and you become a new part of the Christian family. Sanctification is what comes afterwards. Discipleship is all about sanctification. Sanctification is when God changes you to be what you should be after conversion.

Christian discipleship then is concerned with what happens after you have become a Christian. Just like when you get married the actual day of marriage is just the beginning so when you become a Christian the day of conversion is just the beginning.

Disciples are not just new testament characters who lived and died many years ago. Jesus told us (the great commission) to make disciples of all nations.

Now the process of discipleship and the change that takes place in a persons life is very much the work of the Holy Spirit. However if Jesus tells us to make disciples then this implies that discipleship is something that we do. Discipleship is something that we should be involved in, we have a role to play. This means then that discipleship is not just about what God does in us but is also something that we must work on for ourselves (with the help of other Christians and especially the church of course).

Christian Life Coaching is about helping you with your discipleship. This doesn't mean twelve hours of in depth therapy every time you want to improve its about taking your discipleship by the scruff of its neck and doing something about it.

This doesn't displace prayer or God. What is does do is challenge you to take your discipleship seriously. You know you are the one who can make a big difference in your discipleship.

Don't realy on others to make you a good disciple. Rely on God and on yourself.

Discipleship is important and it is something that God has told us we must be involved in. We should not just sit around waiting for God to make everything good but we should be actively invovled in our own discipleship.
