Importance of a good prayer life Print E-mail
One of the things that has always amazed me is the way in which we Christians somehow believe that we can get away without praying. We don't pray for a day or two and then we complain that our spiritual life is bad and everything seems to be going wrong. The sad thing is that if you leave it long enough you start to believe that the unmotivated, dull way you live is actually a "normal" Christian life.
Jesus prayed every day, sometimes for a long time and often he would get up early in the day to make sure he did it. My question is this: if Jesus felt that he had to do this, why do we think we can get away with not praying or just the occasionaly quick prayer?

Part of Life Coaching is about honesty. I want you to be honest with yourself for a moment here. Forget about how you feel you need to impress your fellow church goers. Forget about how impressive your friends think you are in your Christian life. What you are about to admit is between yourself and God, no one else.

How often do you pray and do you think it is enough?

When I left Minister Training College I hardly prayed at all. I had learned to pray from a book and that was about all I did. It wasn't that I didn't give any time to it or that the words I read were not good words but that deep down I knew that the things I read were just words to me. I was not opening my heart up to God and I certainly was not praying.

When you pray do you just repeat the same things others say or do you say what you want to say?

We generally learn how to pray by listening to others and it is inevitable that we will use some of the language and words that others we have heard use. However we should be developing our own words and phrases if we are being honest before God.

If you feel that you should do something more with your prayer life then now is the time to start. Commit yourself today to more and better prayer. If you want things to be better today than they were yesterday you need to do something different to what you did yesterday.

Write down a commitment now to pray more and stick it somewhere it will remind you to do it. I don't have space here to talk about goal setting but make sure you do as good a job as you can at setting this goal by making sure it is something you are committed to and something you will know that you have achieved when you have done it.
